Summer arrives and we all want to soak up the sun — the beach, the sand, lazy afternoons in the garden... But the sun can sometimes surprise us: redness, burning, even dizziness. As both a physician and a homeopath, I see these complaints often every year. Today I want to share some prevention tips along with a few natural, homeopathic remedies that can help.
Before You Head Out Into the Sun
Try to stay in the shade during the hottest hours of the day (11:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Drink plenty of water — your body is working hard to cope with the heat, and dehydration only makes things worse. If you're not used to the sun, ease into it; don't spend hours outside on the very first sunny day. Light-colored, loose, breathable clothing and a hat really do make a difference. And if you have young children, elderly family members, or anyone with a chronic condition at home, a little extra caution goes a long way.
I

et Sunburned...
Is your skin red, burning, maybe even blistered? Here are a few remedies worth knowing:
Belladonna — If your skin suddenly turned bright red, feels hot and burning to the touch, almost like heat radiating from within, this is the remedy to think of.
Cantharis — When the burn is genuinely painful, blisters have formed, and even the lightest touch is unbearable, this is one of the remedies I rely on most.
Urtica Urens — No blisters, but the skin is both burning and itchy? This remedy addresses that particular combination well.
Apis Mellifica — If there's noticeable swelling in the area and cold compresses bring relief, with a stinging sensation similar to a bee sting, this one comes to mind.
Causticum — When a burn just won't heal and the skin looks raw, like exposed flesh, this is a remedy I turn to for slow-healing burns.
What About Heatstroke?
This is something we need to take a bit more seriously, because heatstroke isn't something to brush off. Watch for these signs:
A sudden, severe, throbbing headache
Redness in the face, skin that feels overheated
Dizziness, nausea, vomiting
Weakness, exhaustion, a foggy or confused feeling
Sweating that suddenly stops, high fever, clouded consciousness
If you notice confusion, a sudden stop in sweating, or a high fever, please don't waste time — seek emergency medical care right away. Homeopathy can play a supportive role, but in emergencies, medical treatment always comes first.
For milder cases of heat-related illness, here are some remedies I consider:
Glonoinum — I'd call this the classic remedy for heatstroke. If there's a sense of blood rushing to the head, along with a throbbing headache that builds up and fades in waves, this is usually the first one that comes to mind.
Belladonna — A sudden high fever, throbbing headache, and a flushed, bright red face can also point back to this remedy here.
Natrum Carbonicum — For people who simply can't tolerate the sun and always seem to react badly to summer heat, this is a remedy I think of.
Gelsemium — Heaviness in the legs, drooping eyelids, that "exhausted and drowsy" feeling — if this sounds familiar, remember this remedy.
Antimonium Crudum — For people who feel nauseous after too much sun or a hot bath, especially with a thick white coating on the tongue, this is worth considering.
A Final Word
You don't have to give up the joys of summer — just a little awareness goes a long way. Listen to your body when it sends you signals, reach for natural remedies when appropriate, but never hesitate to see a doctor if the symptoms are serious.
Wishing you healthy, sunny days ahead!
